One of the most common distinctions made between grass fed and grain fed meat is that grass fed is leaner and requires special cooking instructions. However, this isn’t always the case. Taste and texture vary based on cattle genetics, grazing practices, and individual animals. Like all beef, when cooked properly, grass fed beef is wonderfully tender and delicious!
However, if you’re new to cooking beef, or simply want to brush up on your skills, keep these pro tips in mind:
1. Bring Beef to Room Temperature Before Cooking
If you’re purchasing one of our frozen grass fed beef packages, you’ll want to thaw your cuts before cooking. Do not use a microwave, but rather, let beef thaw naturally in the refrigerator.
2. Preheat, Preheat, Preheat
Always make sure to preheat your cooking surface before you start. Whether you’re using the oven, pan, or grill, preheating will ensure that you accomplish an even sear.
3. Cook Over Low Heat
After searing your meat, allow it to finish cooking over low heat. Tough beef results from over-exposure to high heat, and no one likes a chewy or overly dry piece of meat. Slow and steady wins the race!
4. No Poking!
Who doesn’t love juicy, mouthwatering beef? Resist the temptation to poke or turn your meat with a knife or fork. Each time you do, you risk letting the meat’s moisture out into the pan instead of onto your plate.
5. After Cooking Let Beef Rest for 8 to 10 Minutes
After your beef is fully cooked, remove it from the heat and tent it with foil. While it rests, the juices will redistribute throughout the cooked beef.
